FINE ARTS

Bishop O’Byrne High School offers a diversity of classes in the Fine Arts including: Choral, Dance, Drama, General Music, Instrumental Band, Instrumental Jazz and Visual Art.  Fine Arts students engage actively in their classes, developing new skills and experiencing their chosen art form through hands-on learning, rehearsals, performances, or exhibitions.  Discover your creative side through Art, Band, Choir, Dance, Drama, Jazz Band or General Music at Bishop O’Byrne High School!

ART

Art 10

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop technical skills and exercise personal creativity through a wide variety of activities and projects such as painting, drawing, printmaking, clay, mixed media and sculpture.  Students will also develop skills in the areas of art criticism and self-evaluation.  Students will use sketchbooks to document their learning, and they will participate in the exhibition of their work at the end of term. 

Prerequisite: Students do not need to have previous art classes to register for Art 10.  A 5-credit course is the preferred prerequisite for students continuing to Art 20.

Art 10 H (Honours)

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop technical skills and exercise personal creativity through a wide variety of activities and projects such as painting, drawing, printmaking, clay, mixed media and sculpture.  Students will also develop skills in the areas of art criticism and self-evaluation.  Students will use sketchbooks to document their learning, and they will participate in the exhibition of their work at the end of term.  This course introduces students to the skills and concepts that will be developed and refined in the IB program. 

Prerequisites: Students must be prepared to bring in previous work or a portfolio for admission and discussion with the teacher.  A minimum mark of 80% in Art 9.  If Art 9 was not taken, an interview with the teacher must take place.

CHORAL MUSIC

Choral Music 10/Choir 15

This performance-oriented course gives students the opportunity to be exposed to many different styles of music.  Students will develop their music reading skills, theoretical skills and singing skills.  This course is intended to develop a lifelong appreciation of music.  Students will participate in rehearsals, workshops, and concerts.  This is a year-long course.  Classes take place both inside and outside the regular schedule. 

Prerequisite: None.  Students enrolled in Choral Music 10 will also be enrolled in Choir 15 for a total of 10 credits.

DANCE

Dance 15

In this course rhythm and tempo meet movement and expression in a range of dance experiences.  Independence and confidence are fostered in an encouraging, supportive atmosphere. 

Prerequisite: None.

GENERAL MUSIC

General Music 10

This is an introductory level course intended for (but not limited to) students interested in a broad spectrum of musical experiences, who do not wish to specialize in choral or instrumental band.  This course consists of music theory, music making, and music electives such as composition, history, technology, world music, jazz, pop, or careers in music. 

Prerequisite: None.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 10/BAND 15

Instrumental Music 10/Band 15

This is an ensemble-based music performance course.  Study of technical, theoretical, historical and ensemble aspects of instrumental musicianship will be covered.  Students will participate in rehearsals, workshops, and concerts.  This is a year-long course.  Classes take place both inside and outside the schedule. 

Prerequisite:  A passion for music - here's your chance to take band if you missed it in Junior High! Students enrolled in Instrumental Music 10 will also be enrolled in Band 15 for a total of 10 credits. 

Note:  When registering for this course, please choose either Woodwind/Saxophone 10 OR Brass/Percussion 10, based on the category of instrument that you play.  Write the instrument that you play next to your choice, and hand the planning form to your counsellor

Instrumental Jazz 15

Students will study jazz music performance.  History, theory, and musicianship components are intertwined in the music lessons.  Students learn many styles including swing, funk, rock, bossa nova, and Latin.  Enrolment in this performance-based course will be based on the teacher’s recommendation.  This is a year-long course.  Classes take place both inside and outside the schedule.

Prerequisite: Instrumental Music 9.  Students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music 10/Band 15 (10 credits) or Instrumental Band 10 (3 credits). 

DRAMA

Drama 10

This course is an introductory course in which students develop their acting skills through speech, movement, planned and spontaneous improvisation, technical theatre, and theatre studies. 

Prerequisite: None.

Musical Theatre 15

Students are introduced to basic principles of acting and singing necessary for the development and production of a full main stage musical show.  Part of the required 75 hours, students

are expected to work a minimum of 10-15 hours in production

development (i.e.: assisting technicians with painting, set construction, lighting and sound set-up, etc.) in order to receive course credit.  This course is offered only if a musical production will be taking place during the school year.  Students are selected by audition/interview.  Students must contact the drama teacher in September is they are interested in this course.

Prerequisite: None. This course does not appear on the course request sheet.

Technical Theatre 15

Students are introduced to basic principles of set design and construction, costume design and construction, lighting design and application, sound design and application, stage management, and backstage work through rehearsals and performances of a full main stage musical production.  Part of the required 75 hours, students are expected to work a minimum of 10-15 hours in production development (i.e.: assisting technicians with painting, set construction, lighting and sound set-up, etc.) in order to receive course credit.  This course is offered only if a musical production will be taking place during the school year.  Students are selected by audition/interview.  Students must contact the drama teacher in September is they are interested in this course.
